Dinner Table Discussion
Discuss the following questions as a family during dinner this week. They’re meant to prompt further conversation about what was experienced on Sunday morning.
I Wonder Questions:

I wonder… why did God want Abram/Abraham to live in the city where he lived? (God chose Abram to go to a special land where his people would live one day.)
I wonder…what promise did God make to Abram/Abraham? (God promised that Abram/Abraham would have a nation larger than the stars in the sky.)
I wonder…why did Abram/Abraham say “yes” to following God?  (Abram/Abraham knew that God was dependable and always kept his promises.)

LESSON SIX: JULY 8

A Quiet Place by Douglas Wood

Key Concept: We can find ultimate rest in God.

Verse: Matthew 11:28-29 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Book Summary: A little boy is looking for a quiet place to get away from all the noise in his life. He explores different places to rest and at the end finds the greatest place to find rest is within himself. However, the Bible teaches that we cannot find rest in ourselves – only in our Living God, who gives us peace and rest in Himself.

Activity Summary: Children will learn what it means to take a Sabbath and rest in God through journaling in their own “Quiet Place Journal” and exploring scriptures that show us how Jesus is the Lord of Rest. Children will share their thinking from their journal in small groups and wrap up in prayer.

Objectives: At the end of the unit, children will be able to:

  • That all great art contains an “echo of Eden”—memories of a good creation, the tragedy of our current condition, and a longing for redemption
  • How to use literature to notice Gospel themes, find common ground with others, and discuss these truths in winsome ways.
  • To enjoy literature, engage in culture, and understand what it means to be created in the image of a creative God.
  • To learn how to “hunt and gather truth” in a variety of contexts.
  • The Gospel is not just for saving souls, but redeeming all of creation.

Grapple Question:  What’s So Great About Heaven?

Kids Learn:  Spending Eternity With God

Dig Into the Bible:  John 14:1-3; Colossians 3:1-2; Revelation 21:1–22:6

What is your dream vacation? Would you be lying on a quiet beach or watching the Super Bowl in a crowded stadium? Maybe you’d take a cruise around the world or a long camping trip. Well, no matter how big you dream, your dream vacation can’t compare with how amazing heaven is! Just being together with God for eternity would beat any place you could go on earth. Encourage your child to dream big about heaven and look forward to a permanent vacation with God.
